To Wang Lun 赠汪伦

By Li Bai 李白

I’m on board; We’re about to sail,

李白乘舟将欲行,

When there’s stamping and singing on shore;

忽闻岸上踏歌声。

Peach Blossom Pool is a thousand feet deep,

桃花潭水深千尺,

Yet not so deep, Wang Lun, as your love for me.

不及汪伦送我情。

To Wang Lun is a very famous poem written by Li Bai, who is one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty. This poem tells a moving story about Li Bai and Wang Lun and shows the extraordinary friendship between them.

On a cold morning, Li Bai is about to sail when he hears Wang Lun stamping and singing on shore. He is very surprised to hear the songs. Meanwhile, he is very glad, because on such a cold, Wang Lun is still singing to see him off. How deep his friendship is! There’s a very strong feeling in his mind. He feels the friendship is much deeper than the Peach Blossom Pool, which is about 1000 feet deep. He stood there shocked, crying a river of tears. Then he writes down this poem which has been passed down from generation to generation.

After reading the poem, I realize it is very important to have a pure friendship, especially in the ever-changing world. And we must cherish it well!
